Integrated Health Network
Vancouver Coastal Health and Volunteer Richmond Information Services (VRIS) are working together on the The Integrated Health Network (IHN).  This initiative was developed to enhance health and social services that support healthy aging at home and improve service coordination among key service providers.

As a result VRIS provides three services that are available to clients of the Integrated Health Network.

Volunteer Visitors

Volunteers are matched with seniors (or adults with long term health problems) based on interest, language, ability, etc. in order to find a potential mutual friendship.

The volunteer will visit with the client in the client’s home approximately once a week for 2 to 3 hours.  The visits may include: chatting, cards/games, assisting with correspondence, reading out loud, assisting with crafts and biography writing.  The possibilities depend on the interests of the client.  Participants must be clients of the Integrated Health Network.

Volunteer Phoners

Volunteers are matched with seniors (or adults with long term health problems) based on interest, language, ability, etc. in order to find a potential mutual friendship.

Volunteers will contact clients 1 to 5 times per week providing social interaction and connection.  This program will also offer volunteer possibilities for those who are unable to get around on their own. Participants must be clients of the Integrated Health Network.

Volunteer Drivers

Clients will be able to call in and request a volunteer driver for an upcoming medical appointment.  The client will bear the cost of mileage and parking.  Clients will have to meet the criteria (able to transfer safely on their own, be continent, able to be left unsupervised, able to dress and undress for medical tests/appointments).  Volunteer Drivers will be assigned to the various appointments scheduled based on availability, suitability, etc.

Volunteers with good driving records, a reliable vehicle and an interest in driving clients to and from medical appointments will be available to provide this service.  Volunteers will be required to carry a minimum of $2 million liability insurance, follow the rules of the road and drive a vehicle that is reasonably easy to get in and out of for people with disabilities. Participants must be clients of the Integrated Health Network.
