Star of richmond: Kim Jones

Kim Jones will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, and dedication. One of his nominators described him as a “leader among leaders,” a sentiment surely shared by everyone he worked with.

As President of Thompson Community Association, he was instrumental in restructuring the board and committees to meet new realities in the voluntary sector, and make program delivery more effective and efficient. As well, he played an integral role in creating a fair and equitable job evaluation process for the employees of Richmond’s nine community associations. But beyond policies and procedures, Kim was a presence. He encouraged and mentored board and committee members, and was a role model for volunteers young and old.

In February 2009, he began volunteering as an Ambassador at the Richmond Olympic Oval. In this position, he conducted public tours of the facility, welcoming visitors from around the world. He also helped train new Oval Ambassadors. When the time came after the Games to convert the Oval into a world-class fitness and wellness centre, he was first in line to offer assistance.

During the Winter Olympics, he was a volunteer at the Richmond O Zone Celebration Site, and again served as a mentor to younger volunteers.

While this individual sadly passed away earlier this year, his legacy of community leadership will live on through the organizations and people on which he’s had such a profound impact. He may no longer be with us, but his star will forever shine brightly on the Richmond horizon.
